Catherine Wessinger is professor of the history of religions and women's studies. She earned her Ph.D. in the history of religions at University of Iowa. She teaches courses on world religions, Asian religions, women and religion, and millennialism. She served as chair of the New Religious Movements Group at the American Academy of Religion from 1991-1996. She is a member of the Executive Advisory Committee of Nova Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions. She has edited two books on women's religious leadership in America, and has edited one book and written another How the Millenium Comes Violently), on the relationship between millennialism and violence. Her published dissertation addressed the topics of women's religious leadership, millennialism, and new religious movements, which she has continued to explore.
