The Department of Psychology at Loyola University New Orleans

Major in Psychology

Who Majors in Psychology?

Approximately 300 HNS students have decided that a B.A. in Psychology offers them the liberal arts preparation which they want. Based on the information about our graduates in the past ten years, approximately a third of these students will continue on for a graduate degree in some area of psychology (clinical, counseling, industrial, experimental, or some other area).  In addition, another third will seek an advanced graduate or professional degree in a related area (law, medicine, dentistry, optometry, social work, business, or other fields). Our graduates have traditionally done well in their graduate and professional school careers.  There are endless careers and jobs for Psychology majors who have a B.A. degree from Loyola, a solid foundation in psychology, a strong liberal arts background and marketable skills.

What is unique about Loyola's Psychology Program?

Everything! (Well, almost everything) The overall organization of our program is designed in non-traditional ways, such as the sequence of our courses. Individual courses are often designed specifically to meet the needs of our students, and frequently contain laboratory activities. These provide a solid preparation which is often not available in smaller university Psychology departments. A variety of instructional and assessment techniques are used in the courses we offer.  We offer a number of upper division courses and laboratory activities which are frequently not available to undergraduates (such as Comparative Psychology, Studies in the Psychology of Women, Environmental Psychology, Psychopharmacology). Our undergraduate thesis program produces award winning research projects and our Practicum program is nationally recognized. We are seriously committed to student advising and close student-faculty interaction. Our faculty are nationally recognized researchers, experts in several disciplines of psychology and professional psychologists.

What should I do for more information?

If you want to know more about the field of Psychology, you might sign up for PSYC-A100, Introduction to Psychology.  That course is the starting point for all our programs.  Next, you should visit the Chairperson of the department who can answer a lot of your questions and line you up with a permanent academic advisor (if you decide on a major or minor).  And someplace along the way, you should start talking to the Psychology students and getting involved in Psychology organizations--the Psychology Club is open to anyone with an interest in Psychology, and Psi Chi is a national honor society in Psychology.

Major in Psychology Pre-Med

A major in Psychology Pre-Med is offered at Loyola University New Orleans in addition to the traditional Psychology track.  Psychology is the fourth most common major among medical school entrants. Our Pre-Med major retains the best part of our traditional major, and adds as adjunct courses the preparation which most medical and dental schools prefer in their applicants.  Much like a double major in Psychology and Pre-Med, it's one of three formal pre-med majors on campus.  Our pre-med major is designed for the student whose first interest is in Psychology and plans a career in one of the health professions.
