Bio and Publications

Dr. Mui specializes in 20th Century continental philosophy, including Sartre, phenomenology, feminist theory, and Marxism after Marx. Trained in both the analytic and continental traditions, she teaches courses in existentialism, philosophy of mind, feminist philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, Sartre and de Beauvoir. She has published articles in Sartre, Strawson, phenomenology, feminism, and the problem of embodiment. Her recent publications include, "Rethinking the Pornography Debate: Some Ontological considerations", Bulletin de la Societe Americaine de Philosophie de Langue Francaise (10:2, 1998); "Sartre and Marcel on Embodiment: Reevaluating Traditional and Gynocentric Feminisms", Feminist Interpretations of Jean-Paul Sartre (Penn State Press, 1999); "Pornography, Objectification, and the Sartrean 'Look'", The Problems of Resistance (Humanity Books, 2001); and "Enduring Freedom: Globalizing Children's Rights", Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy (18:1, 2003) She is also co-editor, with Julien Murphy, of Gender Struggles: Contemporary Approaches to Feminist Philosophy (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002).

She is President of the Central Division Sartre Circle, Vice-President of The North American Sartre Society (NASS), and member of the Diversity Committee of the Society of Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy (SPEP). She serves as a frequent referee for journals in Sartre and feminist theory, including Sartre International Studies and Journal of the Womens Studies Association. Currently, she is working on an article on the phenomenology of trauma, as well as a book-length project on Sartre and feminism.
