Majors
The department offers majors in French, and Spanish, and Classical Studies.
As part of Loyola’s Pathways Strategic Plan and related program restructuring, new students are not being accepted into the German, Russian, or Japanese programs.
Minors
The department also participates in a minor program in Latin American and Medieval studies.
Requirements for Majors and Minors
Depending on previous study or the results of a placement exam, students wishing to major in a language take a maximum of 36 and a minimum of 30 hours in the major language. There is also an adjunct requirement for majors -- one course in a second language taught by the department, level 200 or above. Depending on previous study or the results of a placement exam, this adjunct requirement ranges from a maximum of 9 hours, for those who have had
no previous study of the second language, to a minimum of 3 hours.
Students choosing to double major in CMLC and another department in the university are exempt from this adjunct requirement.
Students wishing to minor in a language normally take 21 hours, after the 100 course. In some cases, a maximum of 6 hours may be taken outside the department in related courses in linguistics or history and civilization.
