Dr. Michael Ross joins department
History professors have a new colleague this year. Dr. Michael Ross, assistant professor of history, joined the team on the fourth floor in Bobet Hall. His office doesn't house as many books as Dr. Moore's yet. But it does have books such as The Ruling Race, by James Oakes and Imagining the Law, by Norman Cantor. Dr. Ross received his Doctorate in History at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He wrote his dissertation on the Supreme Court during the Civil War. Dr. Ross said he thinks the Civil War is very important. "I believe it is the central event in American history." He earned his undergraduate history degree at Skidmore College in Saratoga, N.Y. Dr. Ross focused on corporate law while at Duke University Law School. He worked in New York at a Wall Street law firm and spent most of his time on bank mergers. Before he came to Loyola, Dr. Ross said he considered himself a New Yorker. Now he considers himself a New Orleanian. "New Orleans is a great city for historians," he said. Dr. Ross said he is happy to be at Loyola. "This is what everyone hopes for in graduate school--to teach in a quality institution," he said. Some of the courses Dr. Ross will teach include the Age of Jackson, U.S. Legal History, U.S. Military History, The Civil War and intro courses.Over There: Summer school abroad takes three history students to different spots on the map.
