Dr. Beorn’s historical interests are centered in modern European history, specifically the history of the Nazi period and the Holocaust. His manuscript is an investigation of the participation of the German Army in the mass killings of Jews in the Soviet Union. It examines the various modes and spectrums of participation at the local level and how individuals negotiated this participation, benefiting from it and, rarely, aiding Jews under their control. In addition, Dr. Beorn is interested in issues of comparative genocide, geographical applications to the study of the Holocaust, and sexual violence. His work has been published in several scholarly journals and he continues to work closely with programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C. and the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City.
Dr. Beorn joined the faculty of Loyola University in 2011 as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History. He views teaching and sharing the complexities of history as an integral part of the research process and he brings his enthusiasm for history and historical sources to the classroom.
