Fall Canoe Paddle -- November 7th, 2008

Our annual major field trip of the Fall semester is the CANOE PADDLE. Paddle with Dr. David White through some of the most beautiful swamps and bayous just a short distance from New Orleans in Southeastern Louisiana. The late afternoon into evening and night trip offers great a twilight experience to see firsthand our cypress trees, swamp and marsh plants, and wildlife - we usually see alligators, herons, and spectacular scenes of spanish moss covered trees. With lights after dark we shine for night stalking wildlife - an adventure you shouldn't miss. Dr. White is one of the foremost naturalist ecologists of our area.

Meeting logistics: The trip has a mid-Friday afternoon departure time posted on the home page of this Environmental Studies web site.  We leave from the roadway between Monroe Hall and the Music/Communication Building. Travel time is approximately one hour to launch site. Four to five hours is spent in a canoe. No experience is necessary. Life jackets will be worn at all times. Please bring some sort of snack and water because no stops are made to and from the launch site. Dress comfortably and do bring some sort of flashlight (and cameras if you wish). Also, bug spray if you are bugged by bugs. Remember that you likely will get wet shoes and anything in the bottom of the canoe will get wet if you do not bring waterproof material - even a plastic trash bag will do. Finally, pay close attention to the weather the day of the trip and dress accordingly in layers - remember it is often 10 - 15 degrees cooler over water. We go rain or shine as long as the university is in session - no rain date!
