Student Opportunities

Student Organizations

Students can join Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, or ALEPH, a written and spoken word club, both of which sponsor various activities on campus throughout the academic year.

Study Abroad

Students are given the opportunity to broaden their horizons by participating in the study abroad program, which allows them to take classes in one of several European countries while experiencing cultures different from their own.

Internships

The English department offers various writing and teaching internships to enable our majors and minors to improve their skills, gain professional experience, and make important contacts in the business community, while obtaining college credit. With guidance from Kelly Wilson, students in internships secure positions at magazines, at art associations and museums, in grants and publications offices, at technical writing offices, and in other locations off campus. With supervision from editor Chris Chambers, majors and minors can also participate in publishing and Editing Internships with our national literary quarterly, the New Orleans Review. With the guidance of Robert Bell, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) interns study writing instruction, working with students in the writing centers and in classroom settings.

English Honors Thesis

Students have the opportunity to complete a fifty-page thesis or a collection of creative works (poems, stories, essays, or a script) in their senior year, which offers excellent preparation for the kind of extensive writing expected in graduate school, the professions, and business. For more information (including eligibility, timelines, specific requirements and forms): Honors Thesis Guidelines.
