Facilities
As part of Loyola’s Pathways Strategic Plan and related program restructuring new students are not being accepted into the Computer Science (CS) and Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs. In addition, only students with Junior or Senior status as of Fall 2006, and with departmental approval, may complete majors in either of these two programs. Continuing students with a declared major in CS or CIS should contact the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
There are several computer laboratories, located on the 4th and 5th floors of Monroe, that support the Computer Science (CS) and Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs:
The Undergraduate Research Lab
Located in MO 562 houses carrels and workstations for undergraduate students working on research projects with faculty members. The equipment available to students includes UNIX and Windows servers and workstations, laptops, wireless access points, a laser printer and a scanner. A high-speed network connects the servers and workstations to each other and to the Internet. Several software packages are installed in support of Internet applications, web services, software development, graphics and database access.
Software Engineering Lab
Located in Monroe 563, this lab contains 20 PCs each with 382M RAM, 18G hard drive, zip drives, and the latest software. This lab is used primarily by upper division CS and CIS majors. It is for the exclusive use of department majors and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Data Warehouse and Visualization Lab
This lab is located in MO 564. It consists of a Sun Enterprise 450 server with ten Ultra 10 SPARC workstations each with a large color monitor, a printer and a scanner. This lab is used by upper division majors and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Monroe Teaching Labs
Monroe 528 and 470 house labs that are used for classroom activities. It is used primarily for Freshmen and Sophomore courses and each consists of 25 Dell PC's configured similarly to those in the Software Engineering Lab
All labs, buildings and dorms are connected through the Loyola network, which provides access to university resources and the Internet. There are several other University labs that have somewhat less powerful compters (PC and Mac) than the department labs which are also open to students most hours during weekdays and somewhat fewer hours on weekends.
