Student Opportunities

We house the Eta Gamma Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classical studies national honor society for students studying Greek or Latin. Eta Sigma Phi sponsors parties, movies, and lectures for all students in Classical Studies. Members are eligible for scholarships for summer study in Greece or Italy. Students also can attend the lectures sponsored by the New Orleans Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.

Study abroad programs, such as Loyola Chicago's Rome Center, are available to students. In addition, the program provides opportunities to students who wish to participate in archaeological excavations. Our students have excavated at Petra in Jordan, in Italy, in Great Britain, and on the island of Cyprus. The program keeps a file of summer programs and opportunities students can pursue.

Scholarships

Long-time classical humanities and devoted educator Emmett Bienvenu, S.J., taught in Classical Studies for 38 years. In his honor, alumni and friends of Father Bienvenu established the Emmett M. Bienvenu, S.J., Endowed Scholarship awarded to outstanding students majoring and minoring in classical studies. We also keep a file of external scholarships and actively encourages students to apply for them.
