Chemistry majors have at their disposal state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation in chromatography, electrochemistry, and spectroscopy.

In conjunction with the university library, students have access to online chemical databases. Using Macintosh and IBM RISC computers, students gain experience with molecular modeling programs, instrument simulation software, and chemistry tutorials.

The first phase of the Monroe chemistry laboratory was completed in the spring of 1998. The wing was designed to encourage chemistry students in a modern atmosphere which showcases the centrality of science in a liberal arts education and its importance to society. The renovation includes a shared W.M. Keck Instrumentation and Computing (KIC) lab with over $250,000 of equipment and two new teaching labs. The labs feature computer access integrated into lab benches and an open floor plan for teaching and interacting with students. The addition of a spiral staircase provides a connection between the KIC lab and the undergraduate research area on the second floor of Monroe Hall. The chemistry wing was dedicated in fall 1999 in honor of Dr. Gregory Choppin, a 1949 chemistry graduate.

The second phase of the Monroe chemistry laboratory began in December 2007. When completed, the renovated space will include new teaching laboratories, a state-of-the-art lecture hall, and departmental offices. We look forward to moving into our new space during the fall of 2008.
